The key to reducing poverty could be a focus on developing talent. Apollo Medskills, a joint venture between Apollo Hospitals Group and the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), has set up 50 training centres across 22 states in India ever since it was set up in 2012.
The initiative to empower rural youths with skills addresses the acute shortage of trained professionals in healthcare, and also helps India address the problem of poverty and unemployment. Over 70% of its students have been successfully placed in healthcare institutions and pharmaceutical companies.
Apollo Medskills won the Gold Award for the Talent Development category in 2018 with their rapid scale-up, offering over 60 courses and training over 9,000 youths from rural India to become healthcare professionals.
The Asian Hospital Management Awards, now in its 18th year, is a prestigious ceremony which recognises and honours hospitals in the Asia Pacific for best practices to improve healthcare.
